Finding practical solutions for banana waste in Lebanon

Online: Thursday, 21 September 2023
Field trip: October 2023

Explore our recent green entrepreneurship lab, a collaborative effort by Cewas and partners from the EcoSwitch Coalition. This initiative brought together entrepreneurs, thematic experts, and business support organizations to find practical solutions for tackling banana waste in Lebanon. The workshop, held online on September 21, 2023, was followed by a planned physical visit to South Lebanon in October 2023, unfortunately canceled due to regional conflict.

Despite this setback, a meeting in Beirut in November with the core group of experts showcased the initial results of our collaboration. Our ongoing partnership with Cultiva, a composting business, and the manufacturer Badria El Osta, supported by the Asfari Foundation, has led to the manual production of biodegradable bags from banana fiber. Cultiva plans to utilize these bags for packaging and selling its soil. Further developments include Cultiva, with support from programs like the EU Spark program, working on establishing a mechanical production unit for these eco-friendly bags.
